Fireside Chat with Mike Knoop, Zapier Co-founder + Chief Product Officer

Join our fireside chat with the Co-founder + Chief Product Officer of Zapier: Mike Knoop

You'll learn how to:

1. Scale a remote team

2. Find product market fit and develop strong traction channels

3. Create a product that can effectively handle hundreds of integration and millions of users

Early in Mike's career, he expanded his interested in technology by becoming a moderator for the Facebook developer forums and community. In October 2011, he attended a Startup Weekend with Wade Foster and Bryan Helmig, both whom I'd met while working part-time at Veterans United in college. Over 48 hours they built and pitched the first demo of what is now Zapier.

The three of them kept working on it and things were going really well. They had a few hundred paid beta customers and a product close to launch. By this point, he had stopped going to his graduate classes and was full time into Zapier. The team then joined the YC S12 batch.

Today, Zapier is an eighty-person team with over 1.5 million users.

Hosted by Autopilot, a visual marketing software for automating customer journeys.

San Francisco APIs & IPAs

API's and IPA's (APIIPA) is back!  After a great inaugural event in January, we're excited to return to Covo and host Sacramento based Big Stump Brewery and Cisco Systems.

 This special APIIPA will feature;

• A preview of the DEVNET Create conference

• Hands on with Cisco's award winning Spark Board.

• Lightning talks

Big Stump

Big Stump is an amazing brewery out of Sacramento, famous for its CA State Fair winning double IPA.  Big Stump produces a variety of amazing beers and we're lucky enough to have co-founder and brewmaster, Alex Larrabee joining us.  We'll be featuring the famous award winning double IPA as well as a little surprise that is just about to be released!

DEVNET's CREATE

For the first time ever, Cisco's developer network or "DEVNET" is hosting its own conference!  DEVNET Create is the IoT conference where applications meet infrastructure. Come join the brightest IoT, cloud, and enterprise developers as we bring clarity to the blurred lines between infrastructure and applications.

Our developer network is unique in the fact that Cisco works with so many different areas and aspects of technology.  We don't just work on helping you program an IoT device... We help you provision it, secure it, host it and optimize it!  Our developers know how all of the parts fit together and they want to share that expertise with you! They've run into the problems and created solutions using the unmatched knowledge and resources available to Cisco.  Come by APIIPA to get a sneak preview of Create, and hear from some of the same speakers that will be appearing at the event (announcements to follow).

CISCO SPARK BOARD

Cisco has also just installed one of its brand new 4K Spark Boards at Covo and we're excited for you to come check it out!  The Spark Board was built with team collaboration in mind and is our all-in-one device for secure video conferencing, white boarding, video and audio calls, and presentations! Cisco is honored to have just received the Red Dot design Award for "extraordinary innovative design."

Christie Abel from the Cisco team will be there to tell you all about the Cisco Spark board and how you can use it to improve collaboration on your team!

Lightning Talks

Michael Todd from Epoch will be speaking about securing Spark Bots.

Covo member, Springer Nature will be talking about their own API and how they use it to provide quality content.

We look forward to seeing everyone and want you to get home safely. Please arrange for a sober ride home or plan on taking a Rideshare service, Muni or BART.

SF Basic Income Create-a-thon 2017

We’re hosting a Basic Income Create-a-thon! Join us for a marathon weekend of creative action around universal basic income, where participants team up to create projects aimed at raising awareness and building support for the idea. Food and drinks will be provided all weekend -- all you need to do is show up and create!

Prompt
The way that most people hear about basic income today is from wonky policy descriptions in news articles or media pieces.

What are creative ideas for better ways to introduce people to basic income and get them to become supporters?

Schedule
This is a weekend-long event:

Friday, 7pm: kick-off, discussion, team-forming

Saturday, 9am: project work all day

Sunday, 9am: project work until presentations at 3pm

Other Details

  • Laptops strongly suggested, but not required
  • If the registration fee is out of your budget, email questions@universalincome.org and we’ll take care of it.

What is a Create-a-thon?
At Create-a-thons, writers, artists, videographers, technologists, and others come together and spend a weekend working on creative projects around the theme of Universal Basic Income in order to raise awareness and support for the idea. These projects range widely in scope and perspective--from crowdfunding Basic Income giveaways to short story anthologies on how this policy might affect different facets of society.

The event will start on a Friday evening, continue all day on Saturday, and run through Sunday afternoon. During that time, participants will pitch ideas for projects, form into groups, and then work towards making their ideas a reality. At the end of the weekend, teams will present what they’ve accomplished to the full group.

What do you mean by projects?
The way we use it, “project” is a pretty open-ended term. A project is any group or individual creation that helps more people get on board with the idea of basic income.

Past projects have included everything from short films to a crowdfunded basic income sweepstakes, to projects that allow self-organized communities to provide their members with a basic income.

Typically, projects fall into one of three categories:

  • Research: growing the evidence base

  • Education: raising awareness

  • Organizing: building support

If you’d like to see even more examples of past projects, check out our past Create-a-thons here.

What’s the schedule?
The event will start on Friday evening, continue all day on Saturday, and run through Sunday afternoon. During that time, participants will pitch ideas for projects, form into groups, and then work towards making their ideas a reality. At the end of the weekend, teams will present what they’ve accomplished to the full group.

What does the registration fee pay for?
The registration fee helps us cover costs for the event space and food for the weekend. If the fee is out of your budget, email questions@universalincome.org and we’ll take care of it.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Public transportation is the best way to travel to the event. The closest BART / Muni station is Powell St., which is about 2 blocks from the location. There is some street parking available, though not much, and a large parking garage across the street from Westfield Mall on Mission St between 4th and 5th St.
