Back to the Future - A Time Traveling Party*

It’s been more than 30 years since Back to the Future first graced the screen. But it's never to late to go BACK... to the future!!!

Did we mention? This is going to be a TIME TRAVELING PARTY.

Oh yea. We'll begin festivities in 1985, rocking out to Huey Lewis and other other 80's legends, then we'll juice up the flux capacitor and transport the entire building back to 1955! (Don't worry, we're professionals -- it's totally safe.)

If Doc can hook up the lighning rod at the clock tower, we should be safe and sound back in 1985 in no time.

Join us for costumes, theme drinks, movies screenings, and photo ops with a perfect replcia of Marty's Statler Toyota pickup!

80s garb / 50s dresses / puffy vests are strongly encouraged.

21 and over
And remember, where we’re going, we don’t need roads.
(But just in case, it’s on Mission Street).

The Future of Women’s Reproductive Health*

The future of women’s reproductive health: the need for evidence, innovation, and action

Every woman should have the ability to control her own body and plan her family—whether she lives in San Francisco or Senegal.

Accurate information about sexual and reproductive health—and access to services and family planning options that fit their lives—protect women from unintended pregnancies and other serious threats to their health and well-being, including sexually transmitted infections like HIV and human papillomavirus, which can lead to cervical cancer.

Yet today, more than 225 million women worldwide who want to use modern family planning tools do not have access to them.

And now they face new barriers.

Changes in the global funding landscape affect family planning and a wide range of other sexual and reproductive health services for women at all stages of life—including sex education, menstrual health, maternal health, and HIV prevention and treatment. Without these services, the lives and well-being of women and their children are endangered.

On May 17, We’re bringing together experts from local, national, and global organizations to talk about how innovative and evidence-based approaches can give women control over their sexual and reproductive health—and what you can do to support this basic human right.

Our Speakers

Martha Brady, director of Reproductive Health, PATH

Margot Fahnestock, program officer for Global Development and Population, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

Gilda Gonzales, interim CEO, Planned Parenthood Northern California

Kristen Hickey Pedersen, chair of the Health Circle, will moderate.

FocusCatalyst Brainstorming Salon

Covo member Betsy Burroughs has been doing an informal, drop-in conversation salon at her SOMA loft every month since 2004. The Salon went on hiatus for the first time last summer but now is excited to be starting monthly FocusCatalyst Brainstorming Salons up again this Wednesday night, May 3rd 5-8pm, at Covo!

The Salons are just interesting people, interesting conversations.  They aren't meetings nor is there a topic.  Upwards of 50 people typically attended each month (unsure that will be the same going forward).  Attendees skew a little more to men than women and included 20-somethings on up and a lot of artists, authors, filmmakers and tech people.

The FocusCatalyst Brainstorming Salons at Covo are going to be a bit different than the previous ones.  One of the features of the Salon was the Salon Book Table piled with books written by Salon attendees. That's more of a challenge to do at Covo so that won't be happening this Wednesday but it may in the future.

If you want to get more of an idea about the Salons and the kind of people who've come to them over the years, you can read a few past invitations to them on www.betsyburroughs.com.

Hope you can join!

1. Scale a remote team

2. Find product market fit and develop strong traction channels

Early in Mike's career, he expanded his interested in technology by becoming a moderator for the Facebook developer forums and community. SF Basic Income Create-a-thon 2017

We’re hosting a Basic Income Create-a-thon! Join us for a marathon weekend of creative action around universal basic income, where participants team up to create projects aimed at raising awareness and building support for the idea. Food and drinks will be provided all weekend -- all you need to do is show up and create!

Prompt
The way that most people hear about basic income today is from wonky policy descriptions in news articles or media pieces.

What are creative ideas for better ways to introduce people to basic income and get them to become supporters?

Schedule
This is a weekend-long event:

Friday, 7pm: kick-off, discussion, team-forming

Saturday, 9am: project work all day

Sunday, 9am: project work until presentations at 3pm

Other Details

  • Laptops strongly suggested, but not required
  • If the registration fee is out of your budget, email questions@universalincome.org and we’ll take care of it.

What is a Create-a-thon?
At Create-a-thons, writers, artists, videographers, technologists, and others come together and spend a weekend working on creative projects around the theme of Universal Basic Income in order to raise awareness and support for the idea. These projects range widely in scope and perspective--from crowdfunding Basic Income giveaways to short story anthologies on how this policy might affect different facets of society.

The event will start on a Friday evening, continue all day on Saturday, and run through Sunday afternoon. During that time, participants will pitch ideas for projects, form into groups, and then work towards making their ideas a reality. At the end of the weekend, teams will present what they’ve accomplished to the full group.

What do you mean by projects?
The way we use it, “project” is a pretty open-ended term. A project is any group or individual creation that helps more people get on board with the idea of basic income.

Past projects have included everything from short films to a crowdfunded basic income sweepstakes, to projects that allow self-organized communities to provide their members with a basic income.

Typically, projects fall into one of three categories:

  • Research: growing the evidence base

  • Education: raising awareness

  • Organizing: building support

If you’d like to see even more examples of past projects, check out our past Create-a-thons here.

What’s the schedule?
The event will start on Friday evening, continue all day on Saturday, and run through Sunday afternoon. During that time, participants will pitch ideas for projects, form into groups, and then work towards making their ideas a reality. At the end of the weekend, teams will present what they’ve accomplished to the full group.

What does the registration fee pay for?
The registration fee helps us cover costs for the event space and food for the weekend. If the fee is out of your budget, email questions@universalincome.org and we’ll take care of it.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Public transportation is the best way to travel to the event. The closest BART / Muni station is Powell St., which is about 2 blocks from the location. There is some street parking available, though not much, and a large parking garage across the street from Westfield Mall on Mission St between 4th and 5th St.
