Fashion Technologists Meet & Greet

This is a brand spanking new meetup group.  For our first gathering, we're having a casual meet and greet at Covo.  We'd love to say hello, get to know you, and chat about upcoming opportunities with our meetup group as well as ways to participate in the community!

ABOUT FASHION TECHNOLOGISTS

The Fashion Industry is the second dirtiest industry in the world; second only to crude oil.  Its impact is felt around the world in our social systems, economic systems, ecosystems, and our daily lives.  We spend most waking moments in clothing, but we are frequently bombarded by messages reminding us of its superficiality.  For this reason, it has become easy to ignore the industry that wears itself at the surface of our skin.

The good news is, technology is changing the way we buy, sell, and wear fashion. The Fashion Technologists Meetup was created to bring a community together to discuss the successes and challenges ahead in integrating new technologies in the fashion industry.

In future events, we will bring in speakers to discuss the following developments as they pertain to the fashion industry:

Worn Technologies (ie: Wearables, E-textiles, Sensors, Textiles Technology, Wearable Batteries)

Manufacturing (ie: New Processes, Robotics and Automation, Exoskeletons, Soft Robotics, Blockchain for Supply Chain, CAD Tools, Fit Customization)

VR/AR (ie: Virtual Try-on, Body Scanning, Configurators)

Machine Learning, AI, and Computer Vision (ie: Fit Matching, Visual Search)

Retail Technology (ie: Smart Mirrors, Interactive Displays)

The 3 Fundamentals for a Successful Business You Love

In this informative presentation, participants discover the three fundamental elements required to build a successful business they love. Stephanie Staidle will help you discover what they don’t tell you in business school and what skills are necessary to master for success. Audiences learn new tools, based in the neuroscience of performance, to match a business with their passions, identify and remove obstacles entrepreneurs commonly face, and find the confidence to make their business vision a reality.

Takeaways:

  • Discover how our education system sets us up to think in a limiting way that sets up entrepreneurs for failure (and what you can do differently)
  • How to tap into your innate creativity to produce inspiring ideas, 'wow' products, and effective solutions.
  • Exercises and techniques based in the latest findings of neuroscience and creative psychology to help you tap into your brain's fullest potential for increased performance and confidence.
  • The three foundational elements of business that the successful have mastered (and how you can do the same)

Back to the Future - A Time Traveling Party*

It’s been more than 30 years since Back to the Future first graced the screen. But it's never to late to go BACK... to the future!!!

Did we mention? This is going to be a TIME TRAVELING PARTY.

Oh yea. We'll begin festivities in 1985, rocking out to Huey Lewis and other other 80's legends, then we'll juice up the flux capacitor and transport the entire building back to 1955! (Don't worry, we're professionals -- it's totally safe.)

If Doc can hook up the lighning rod at the clock tower, we should be safe and sound back in 1985 in no time.

Join us for costumes, theme drinks, movies screenings, and photo ops with a perfect replcia of Marty's Statler Toyota pickup!

80s garb / 50s dresses / puffy vests are strongly encouraged.

21 and over
And remember, where we’re going, we don’t need roads.
(But just in case, it’s on Mission Street).

The Future of Women’s Reproductive Health*

The future of women’s reproductive health: the need for evidence, innovation, and action

Every woman should have the ability to control her own body and plan her family—whether she lives in San Francisco or Senegal.

Accurate information about sexual and reproductive health—and access to services and family planning options that fit their lives—protect women from unintended pregnancies and other serious threats to their health and well-being, including sexually transmitted infections like HIV and human papillomavirus, which can lead to cervical cancer.

Yet today, more than 225 million women worldwide who want to use modern family planning tools do not have access to them.

And now they face new barriers.

Changes in the global funding landscape affect family planning and a wide range of other sexual and reproductive health services for women at all stages of life—including sex education, menstrual health, maternal health, and HIV prevention and treatment. Without these services, the lives and well-being of women and their children are endangered.

On May 17, We’re bringing together experts from local, national, and global organizations to talk about how innovative and evidence-based approaches can give women control over their sexual and reproductive health—and what you can do to support this basic human right.

Our Speakers

Martha Brady, director of Reproductive Health, PATH

Margot Fahnestock, program officer for Global Development and Population, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

Gilda Gonzales, interim CEO, Planned Parenthood Northern California

Kristen Hickey Pedersen, chair of the Health Circle, will moderate.

FocusCatalyst Brainstorming Salon

Covo member Betsy Burroughs has been doing an informal, drop-in conversation salon at her SOMA loft every month since 2004. The Salon went on hiatus for the first time last summer but now is excited to be starting monthly FocusCatalyst Brainstorming Salons up again this Wednesday night, May 3rd 5-8pm, at Covo!

The Salons are just interesting people, interesting conversations.  They aren't meetings nor is there a topic.  Upwards of 50 people typically attended each month (unsure that will be the same going forward).  Attendees skew a little more to men than women and included 20-somethings on up and a lot of artists, authors, filmmakers and tech people.

The FocusCatalyst Brainstorming Salons at Covo are going to be a bit different than the previous ones.  One of the features of the Salon was the Salon Book Table piled with books written by Salon attendees. That's more of a challenge to do at Covo so that won't be happening this Wednesday but it may in the future.

If you want to get more of an idea about the Salons and the kind of people who've come to them over the years, you can read a few past invitations to them on www.betsyburroughs.com.

Hope you can join!
